  • Almond milk or other dairy-free milk
  • Vegetable oil
  • Vanilla extract
  • Granulated sugar
  • Gluten free flour
  • Baking powder

Instructions

Below, are some process shots along with simple steps for making the best waffles. Before turning on your waffle iron, be sure to season it. You can use vegetable oil, vegan butter or cooking spray. This will make it much easier to remove them from the iron. I also recommend using wooden tongs to remove them which will prevent ruining the coating on your iron.

Hint: Do not overfill waffle iron. Doing this will cause spillover of the waffle batter.

Toppings

Here are some delicious vegan topping options to elevate your waffles:

  • Fresh Fruits: Top your waffles with an assortment of fresh fruit like sliced strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, or bananas. The natural sweetness and vibrant colors will add a refreshing touch.
  • Nut Butter Drizzle: Melt some creamy almond butter, peanut butter, or cashew butter and drizzle it over your waffles. It adds a luscious, nutty flavor that complements the texture perfectly.
  • Coconut Whipped Cream: Whip up a batch of coconut cream by refrigerating a can of full-fat coconut milk overnight. Then, scoop the thickened cream into a small bowl, add a touch of sweetener like maple syrup or powdered sugar, and whip until light and fluffy. Dollop it generously on your waffles for a delightful, dairy-free alternative to traditional whipped cream.
  • Maple Syrup and Nuts: Classic and irresistible, a drizzle of pure maple syrup over warm waffles is always a winner. Sprinkle some crushed walnuts, pecans, or almonds on top for added crunch and nutty goodness.
  • Vegan Chocolate Sauce: Melt some vegan chocolate chips with a splash of plant-based milk until smooth and glossy. Drizzle the velvety chocolate sauce over your waffles for a decadent and indulgent treat.
  • Coconut Yogurt: Spoon some creamy coconut yogurt on top of your waffles for a tangy and refreshing twist. Add a sprinkle of granola, chia seeds, or toasted coconut flakes for extra texture and flavor.

Remember, these are just a few suggestions. You can mix and match your favorite waffle toppings to create your own unique combinations. Go from eating regular waffles to eating elevated waffles!

Substitutions

Below, are a few substitution ideas you may consider when making this recipe.

  • Almond Milk - instead of almond milk, you can use oat milk, coconut milk or any other non-dairy milk
  • Vegetable Oil - instead of vegetable oil, you can use coconut oil

Variations

Here are a few variation ideas to jazz up your waffles. Get creative and have fun experimenting with these and personalize them to suit your taste preferences!

  • Optional Add-ins - you can add in chocolate chips, nuts or fresh berries such as blueberries
  • Lemon Poppy seed zing - incorporate fresh lemon zest and a generous sprinkle of poppy seeds into the batter to create a zesty and aromatic waffle variation. Serve with a dusting of powdered sugar and a squeeze of fresh lemon juice
  • Pumpkin Spice Twist - Add a touch of fall flavor by mixing in some pumpkin puree and a dash of pumpkin spice into the waffle batter. The result is a cozy and aromatic waffle that pairs perfectly with a drizzle of maple syrup.
  • Cinnamon Apple Delight - Mix in some finely diced apples and a sprinkle of cinnamon into the waffle batter. The combination of warm cinnamon and tender apples will create a comforting and fragrant twist.

Equipment

The size of your waffle iron doesn't matter but it may change the serving size. I used an 8-inch Belgian style waffle maker but feel free to use the one that you already have. The exact one that I used is linked down below.

Storage

Store leftover gluten-free vegan waffles in a resealable bag or airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat them in a toaster oven for crispy waffles. You can also freeze them to enjoy later. Place waffles in a freezer-safe bag. Let waffles thaw out at room temperature then reheat them in your toaster oven.

Top tip

Most 1:1 gluten-free flour already has xanthan gum blended in it so there's no need to add any. I like using Bob's Red Mill gluten-free flour blend.

FAQ

What is the best way to reheat waffles in a toaster oven?

-Preheat your toaster oven to around 350°F (175°C).
-Place the waffles directly on the oven rack or on a baking sheet lined with -parchment paper.
-Heat the waffles for about 5-7 minutes, or until they are heated through and crispy on the outside.
-If desired, you can cover the waffles with aluminum foil during the reheating process to prevent them from getting too crispy.
-Once heated, remove the waffles from the oven and serve immediately with your favorite toppings.

Using this method is a great way to maintain the waffle's texture and ensures that they are evenly reheated. Microwaving them will give you soggy waffles. Enjoy your reheated waffles just as deliciously as when they were freshly made!
