After a powerful storm damages their Maine home, David Drayton (Thomas Jane) and his young son head into town to gather food and supplies. Soon afterward, a thick fog rolls in and engulfs the town, trapping the Draytons and others in the grocery store. Terror mounts as deadly creatures reveal themselves outside, but that may be nothing compared to the threat within, where a zealot (Marcia Gay Harden) calls for a sacrifice.

Wonderfully Weird and Horrifying

Overall, The Mist is a terrifying example of fantastical nightmares coming to life, and the human monsters that crisis can make of us. The acting is on point and the design is a spooky delight. The end will have you screaming.

Jeff H Might be a spoiler(s) ahead...Watched it in 2024, when I was initially interested to see an older film from 2007 featuring actors I've enjoyed in projects of more recent vintage, such as Thomas Jane (The Expanse) and Toby Jones (The Detectorists). The story, though, followed along a typical Stephen King-style trajectory, i.e., the entire cast played cardboard caricatures in a sketchy soapy mash-up of Animal Farm, religious fanaticism, supernatural overtones, overwrought heart string yanking, gory creature feature, sci-fi, alternate dimension, and... wait, what? There's no golden retriever ? Oh, well, at least we get to see a literal wall of 50-pound bags of dog food. The army comes in to save the day in the end, but too late for our hapless main characters.
