These Baked Seasoned Steak Fries are one of my favorite side dishes because I am a huge potato lover. These fries are similar to the delicious thick cut fries that you can get at Red Robin. Not to mention they include one of my favorite seasoning blends ever!

This is one of the easier recipes which you will only need a few tools for. You’ll need a sheet pan, large bowl, plastic bag, and an oven! It is a simple way to make great fries for your friends and family.

You would never know these are baked instead of deep fried! These delicious steak fries will be a great side dish to add to all of your easy dinners. The family will never know that they’re not from a steakhouse. Homemade fries are just the best – especially when they’re oven fries. These are seriously crispy perfection! Pair them with your favorite dipping sauce and you’ll be making these delicious fries all the time. You can also get creative with the seasonings – top them with Montreal steak seasoning, parmesan cheese, tzatziki sauce, or even honey mustard! This is a side dish you’ll keep coming back to.

If you have ever been to a steak house or a burger joint, they usually have these giant, thick, delicious, and perfectly fried fries.

I decided to go home and try to make them myself . . . the end result was amazing! I cooked up a gourmet burger to add to my steak fry recipe and it was incredible! This easy side dish will have everyone knocking on your door!

How to pick the best potatoes:

This recipe calls for large Russet potatoes. When picking these out at the grocery store, it’s important you find the best ones. The type of fries that you end up with will depend on the quality of the potato. My favorite potatoes to use are yukon hold. The best part of yukon gold potatoes is the taste and the thin outer skin. Yukon gold’s thin skin is ideal for those that like a fry with the skin left on. You will also be able to produce thick wedges of potatoes from the yukon gold to make delicious, crispy steak fries. The nice crispy outer layer will produce classic french fries that leave you drooling.

So how do you pick the right potato for your delicious steak fries? You first want to give the potatoes a little squeeze. You want to be sure that there is no give and the potatoes are firm.

Soft potatoes are not as good!

Although soft potatoes aren’t bad to eat, we recommend the crisp, firm potatoes for better flavor and texture when cooking.

When finding your perfect potatoes, you also want to check for cuts and blemishes.

When the potatoes have cuts and blemishes, this means that bacteria has gotten in and you will have to cut these areas out. Once you pick some large potatoes it will be time to bring them home. The only thing you have to do now is get started with cooking!

How to cut potatoes:

When it comes to cutting the perfect steak fries, there are a few things you want to know:

  • Start with a raw potato that has been scrubbed clean and patted dry.
  • Place potatos on their side lengthwise and cut into three large, long sections.
  • Slice each section lengthwise into steak fries, about 1/4 inch thick and 4-5 inches long (the length will depend on the length of your potato).

How to Make Baked Seasoned Steak Fries:

1. Following the tips above, cut the potatoes into fries. If you like thicker fries, you will have to cook them for a little longer.

2. Mix the olive oil (or vegetable oil) and seasonings together in a bowl. Add in the potato wedges with the seasonings and toss until evenly coated. Make sure you have enough oil to cover all of the wedges.

A secret to getting each fry coated in seasoning is to use your hands. If you want to avoid a mess, you can also do this in a gallon-sized resealable bag and shake them all up until they are evenly coated with delicious flavor.

3. Place the coated potato wedges on a baking sheet that has been covered in foil and bake for 45 minutes until cooked through and golden. The correct cook time is essential to producing these perfect fries.

Of course if you have decided to make them a little thicker, you will want to add some time on.

Be sure to frequently check them so they don’t burn… unless you are like me and prefer those crunchy fries.

It really is the simplest recipe and can easily be doubled to feed more people.

  • ¼ cup olive oil
  • 2 teaspoons paprika
  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 2 teaspoons chili powder
  • 2 teaspoons onion powder
  • 4 large russet potatoes (peeled and cut into thin wedges)

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 450 degrees.

  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together olive oil, paprika, garlic powder, chili powder and onion powder.

  • Add potato wedges to olive oil mixture and toss until evenly coated.

  • Cover a baking sheet in foil and spread coated potato wedges onto it.

  • Bake for 40-45 minutes or until golden and cooked through.

    I made without salt but entire family added salt. I do think it’s necessary but often I find better to add after you cook them otherwise potatoes won’t be crispy.

    I typed my comment twice on my phone and continued to receive an error. Here we go again ! My autistic child loved these and this is a big deal if you know anyone that's autistic . I didn't bake them the full time as the recipe calls for nor did I bake then on 450, because of my kiddos pallet . Not to mention , I did not use the full amount of onion and garlic powder for the same reason . My kid actually hates them both. Therefore, I figured less would not be detected , because I wanted him to try it before saying he doesn't like it. They were good! I love fries and wanted a season that wasn't salty.
